Ian McEwan, a star of contemporary English literature, once again justifies his status by excelling in the genre of opera as he has already done so much in that of the novel. This short libretto reads like a short story. The story is remarkably constructed around a quartet of lovers and a submissive foil, whose intertwined emotions are rendered with a consummate art of apparent simplicity. No need to say more about it, the text speaks for itself and reads almost as quickly as one of its reviews.
