In the mood for love, praise of beauty
An aesthetic film, both in terms of image and music (original, beautiful and captivating). Not much happens and yet each scene is intense. The two main characters are well dressed, the heroine changing her dress in almost every shot, the hero not tolerating any creases in his suit serving as a showcase for a carefully selected tie. They are polite, respectful, human and avoid any sentimentality. The gentleness of their gestures and words, their common quest for beauty in all things and at every moment illustrate a high degree of civilization that they are happy to achieve together, while those around them, starting with their respective spouses, give in to unworthy instincts. A likeable drunkard, a gambler and a sly one, appears at times to reinforce this contrast. The outcome is full of nuances, suggestion, like what precedes it. A film that is unlike any other, for the best.
Phantom thread, sublime
What a nice surprise at the turn of a labyrinthine navigation in the depths of a streaming platform: Phantom thread, or the hidden thread. Both meanings are valid, in line with the multiple possible readings of this brilliant film, both in terms of the script, the direction and the acting. It fully deserves its IMDB rating of 7.4. In the world of fashion, a slow drama without slowdowns is played out, the first successful prodigy by Paul Thomas Anderson (co-writer with Daniel Day-Lewis and director). The famous thread unfolds, gradually revealing an omnipresent character in the head of a couturier of the stars and crowned heads: his mother, for whom he once made a dress on the occasion of her second marriage.
The great man's love stories are most often stormy, his conquests failing miserably to interest him for more than a few days. Alma, the latest, should suffer the same fate as the previous ones. But she manages to calm their relationship thanks to her great finesse. Her skill in managing her couple, the means she mobilizes to combat selfishness, her loving style are unprecedented in both literature and cinema. Here is the second prodigy of the co-authors, brilliantly served by a luminous actress. For the rest, you simply have to see this film.
